Zeri Fry (Okara Potato Patty)

ใ‚ผใƒชใƒผใƒ•ใƒฉใ‚ค

A local dish from Gyoda. Despite the name, it is not fried jelly. Okara (soy pulp) and potato are mixed with vegetables like carrot and green onion, shaped into ovals, deep-fried without batter and dipped in sauce. One theory says the coin-like shape earned the name zeni-furai (coin fry), which became zeri-furai over time. It has a simple, fluffy flavor and makes a great snack. Try it cheaply at specialist shops in the city, perhaps with a walk around Gyoda's ancient burial mounds.

It is eaten with a spicy miso sauce made with garlic and chili. The nicely marbled pork and spicy miso go perfectly with beer. There are many yakitori shops in the city, and in the evening the savory smell drifts through the streets with the smoke. Each shop's miso sauce is different, so be sure to compare.
